Graphic artist and 15-year resident of Gulfport Jo Silverleaf was honored by city council on Tuesday, July 18, with the Spirit of Gulfport award. “In June of 2016, in honor and remembrance of the Orlando Pulse Club shooting victims, Silverleaf painted an emotional and vibrant portrait of an aching heart with the caption ‘Gulfport Loves Orlando’,” said Councilmember Yolanda Roman. At the June 13, 2016 candlelight vigil, just one day after the shooting, participants signed the painting and it was then sent it to the city of Orlando.

This year, the artist created another commemorative painting to mark the anniversary of the historic event. “It mimics a heartbeat – a pulse. And, that’s why it has jagged lines,” said Silverleaf. “There’s 49 hearts on there – one for each fallen person. I just feel that we all need to reach out and show each other support and love and that no matter what we are or what we are about, this is the kind of city that takes care of each other.” Her 2017 painting will hang in the Gulfport City Hall.
