Komen Central Florida Closes … Suncoast Group Schedules February 17 Race

| January 15, 2018

Paul Brinkmann, Orlando Sentinel, reports:  “Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s affiliate in metro Orlando is closing its doors, and canceling a February race to raise funds. Komen Central Florida, based in Oviedo, becomes the latest Komen chapter to close or cut back activity following years of controversy. The Arizona chapter closed in 2017.”

Komen Florida Suncoast has scheduled its next Race for the Cure on Saturday, February 17. The races will begin at Vinoy Park, 701 Bayshore Drive NE, following 4:30 pm opening ceremonies.

“I want to inform you that Komen Central Florida’s Board of Directors, after much deliberation, has decided to cease operations and dissolve the affiliate,” said an announcement from Sandra Baranes, executive director of the local office, in an email to agencies it worked with. The email did not cite a reason for the closure, but nationally the organization has dealt with declining turnout at some running races, a major fundraising tool.
